What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Numazu?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Numazu about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Japanese healthcare system. Japan has a universal healthcare system, so you will need to register for health insurance. Prenatal care and childbirth are covered by insurance, but there may be some out-of-pocket costs. Secondly, find a hospital or clinic that suits your needs. Some hospitals in Japan may not have English-speaking staff, so you may want to find one that does or consider hiring a translator. Thirdly, understand the cultural differences. In Japan, it's common for mothers to stay in the hospital for a few days after giving birth, and there are certain customs and traditions associated with childbirth that may be different from your home country. Fourthly, consider joining local expat groups or online forums. They can provide valuable advice and support, and may be able to recommend specific hospitals or doctors. Fifthly, make sure you understand the paperwork. There will be various forms to fill out, both for the hospital and for registering your baby's birth. Lastly, plan for your postnatal care. In Japan, it's common for new mothers to go to a special postnatal care center for a few weeks after giving birth. These centers provide meals, childcare advice, and help with breastfeeding. Remember, having a baby in a foreign country can be a challenging experience, but with the right preparation and support, it can also be a very rewarding one," remarked another expat who made the move to Numazu, Japan.
