What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Numazu?

Answer this Question

We asked people in Numazu if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!...

"When visiting Numazu, it's important to respect the local customs and traditions to avoid any cultural faux pas. Firstly, avoid wearing shoes inside homes, temples, and certain traditional restaurants. There will usually be a place to store your shoes at the entrance. When eating, never stick your chopsticks vertically into your rice as this is a ritual performed at funerals. Also, avoid passing food from chopstick to chopstick as this is another funeral rite. In Japan, it's considered rude to blow your nose in public, so try to do this in private. When visiting shrines or temples, follow the local customs for prayer and purification, which usually involve bowing and clapping. Avoid pointing with your finger, instead use your whole hand to gesture. It's also considered impolite to talk loudly in public places, especially on public transportation. When giving or receiving something, use both hands as a sign of respect. Lastly, tipping is not customary in Japan and can sometimes be seen as insulting, so avoid leaving extra money at restaurants or for services," explained one expat living in Numazu, Japan.
